By most accounts, Britain is the most haunted nation in the world.  From earliest times, its inhabitants have carried with them a wealth of supernatural beliefs, each generation spinning its own - often more fanciful - versions of the old myths and legends to explain the stranger aspects of the human and natural world.  For them, spirits walked with the living, the wicked tormented the innocent and suffered torment in return, and the lands wild reaches were places of great wonder and fear. 

Drawn from the traditional stories and centuries of local lore, many of the accounts on this site hark back to a time when wizards appeared to command the elements, the Devil made mischeif on a regular basis and the unhappy dead clung to the world of the living.  As a populous group of isles with a long and bloody history, it is no suprise that Britain has more spectres than its neighbours, but not all haunted happenings are historic.  Many mysteries continue to baffle and intrigue, and many ghostly apparitions are distinctly modern.  No one claims to see dragonsin the sky today; strange lights may be described by observers as alien spacecraft or at the very least UFO's. Phantom buses have supplanted spectral coaches on the streets, and real black cats - rather than demonic black dogs - prowl the countryside.  Ancient Roman Legionaires may still march over hillsides, but spectral soldiers on manoeuvres are just as likely to have come from the Second World War.
